It made its competitive debut at the Australian Grand Prix and was driven by Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg. The car was designed under the technical direction of Andrew Green and featured a Mercedes PU106C Hybrid V6 power unit, as part of Force India's long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz. The VJM09 sported a predominantly silver, black, and orange livery, representing the team's main sponsors, including Sahara, Kingfisher, and Hype Energy. Throughout the season, the car showed strong and consistent performance, securing several points finishes and two podiums. The team finished fourth in the Constructors' Championship, amassing a total of 173 championship points. The VJM09's best result came at the European Grand Prix in Baku, where Pérez finished third, showcasing the team's competitive edge and progress during the 2016 season.
