3D model of a Roman throwing spear, used predominantly by Roman legionaries during the Republic and early Empire periods, from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD. The pilum consists of a long wooden shaft, approximately 4 to 6 feet in length, and a narrow, elongated iron or steel shank with a pyramidal point. Roman soldiers typically carried two pila into battle, hurling them at enemy formations just before engaging in close combat with their gladii.
