56.9 tonnes (62.7 short tons)The Tiger I was a German heavy tank in World War II, deployed in Africa and the Soviet Union from 1942. It gave the German army its first tank with the 8.8cm KwK 36 gun, with 1,347 built from Aug 1942 to Aug 1944. Production of the Tiger I was stopped for the Tiger II. Despite being called an excellent design for its time, it was criticized for using expensive materials and labor-intensive production methods. The nickname "Tiger" was coined by Ferdinand Porsche and the Roman numeral added after the Tiger II was produced. It was originally designated as Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H by Henschel as designer/manufacturer and Sd.Kfz. 182 in the ordnance inventory. It was later re-designated in March 1943 as PzKpfw VI Ausf. E and Sd.Kfz. 181. Today, only 7 Tiger I tanks remain in museums and private collections globally.
