Hi everyone! We continue series of short interviews with the best artists from Hum3D competitions.

Juwon Seo, author of the «Inspection», will answer six questions and give us a look behind the scenes of his work.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do and how did you become a 3D artist?

Hello, my name is Juwon Seo and I work as a 3D motion graphics freelancer in Korea.

I usually work on motion graphics and sometimes upload personal work on SNS.

In 2020, I started working at a motion graphics studio in the advertising industry, and now I’m freely working on outsourcing.

I’m still not sure what my favorite direction of work is, so I challenge it when I have a new project.

Where did you find the inspiration for your latest challenge entry? What’s the story behind its creation?

To participate in the challenge, I recklessly searched for many references, including YouTube, Pinterest, and Art Station.

Among them, the concept art of StarCraft 2 Cinematic and the cinematic videos of Eve Online caught my eye.

Their work drove my eyes crazy, and I watched closely the appearance of the factory appearing for a short time and the background of the flying spacecraft.

What software and plug-ins did you use to create this image? Did you face any difficulties, and how did you overcome them?

The software used was Cinema4d, Octane renderer and Aftereffects.

The difficulty was that, due to the nature of the sci-fi genre, buildings have complex structures and appearances. I didn’t have the skills to deal with them.

Fortunately, Hum3d and many other modeling sales sites have many assets to solve them. I overcame the difficulties by buying and using them.

How often do you do personal projects and keep your portfolio up-to-date? Which one is your favorite?

If you work for a long time, you will get tired. In that case, I work on a simple style frame or a short video and share it on SNS.

When I see the reactions of the followers on SNS, I feel that my greed as an artist is relieved.

In addition, I think personal projects have a good effect because they can test one’s full ability and resolve to achieve self-realization.

Who or what has inspired or delighted you recently? Maybe it was a book, a movie, or an artist.

The software I use is different, but I’m very inspired by artist Ian Hubert’s work. His work is amazing. The tutorials he uploads to YouTube seem really fast and efficient.

Please tell us your five short tips for creating 3D art.

  1. – Seeing and observing a lot of things. Regardless of whether it’s a game or a movie.

  2. – Not afraid to work and going through trial and error. Even if it’s hard to work, they become an experience for you.

  3. – It’s something you usually enjoy delusions. Sometimes even useless thoughts can help you work.

  4. – Admitting that your work may be lacking. If you only pursue perfection, you’ll get tired of yourself.

  5. – Please take a break from work and do hobbies around you. During the break, unexpected ideas come to mind.
